“More than 1,500 NYPD officers have either resigned or retired so far this year – on pace to be the biggest exodus of officers since the statistics have been available”

https://nypost.com/2022/06/11/nypd-c...ecord-numbers/

Do you blame them? Me, heck no! Why would anyone take a job where they can be sued for any little thing AND be forced vaccinated?! For the uniform?

I'm confused as to why the retiring part is news.

That’s my class all leaving. July 1st would have been my 20th anniversary. Thankfully I did not have to finish the full 20 years. Working these last two years would have been hell and the massive riot OT wouldn’t have counted towards my pension.

Why take the job then. At this point they should know what comes with the uniform. If not they should do their research like anyone else in the workforce.

My brother and I were called to the NYPD officer training school on 22nd street (?) after we applied having served several years as an auxiliary police officer back in 1999 throughout when September 11th happened. Had I gone through with the training, I would’ve been able to retire myself today.
Back then, the NYPD was admired nationwide - it was a respectable job to have. But when the politics started to change (along with a few bad apples in the force who were given massive media attention) then the job did not become worthwhile. I don’t think this has anything to do with the job itself or research but how it has been represented and portrayed by politicians and the media throughout the years.

The average worker changes jobs 12 times in a life time. Many people need to research the job they are taking.

CNBC said up to 50 percent who quit changes careers.

https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2022/03/09/...-the-same.html

Younger workers were more prone to make the leap. Of employed adults ages 18 to 29 who said they quit a job in 2021, 61% shifted their field of work or occupation, compared to 45% of those ages 30 and older, according to Pew. It based its analysis on 6,627 non-retired U.S. adults, including 965 who say they left a job by choice last year. The data was collected as a part of a larger survey conducted Feb. 7 to 13.

I’d say being a NY cop is now easier than ever.
You don’t really have to enforce any of the laws. No proactive policing. No arrests for weed, disorderly conducts.

If you feel the scenario is too dangerous you just look the other way. Nyc is not where you want to make a difference. You do your 8 hours a day and go home to your family. No one wants another Saint George Floyd in their hands or knees. Let people do crime, smoke a little, sell a little, who cares.

1500 is 4% of 35,000. How is that significant in any way?

The ones who aren't retiring-retiring are going to be pretty shocked when they ask about their union representation at their next job. Or their pensions.

Point them to me then because my company is always hiring, the work is easy, and making money off of skelly NY’ers with frivolous lawsuits is inflation proof!
