Mental illness exists in all ethnicities. It's interesting how in NYC, violence among the mentally ill seems to only affect a very specific cohort.
Maybe the issue isn't really "mental illness"?

Yes there are more arrests and offenders that are Black Americans.
But yes, there was also a systemic racism in the country that pounded on that and sentenced them more heavily, which resulted in the destruction of the classic 2 parents structure for the families. It did create a bigger issue from a mental health perspective. Let's not be naïve.
The latter creates a situation of poverty and social adversity that becomes harder to overcome as time goes on.
I see both arguments from both sides. What I do not see is connecting the dots. It's a tough life right now as a dark person in the US. Moreover, they have not grown up in a classic family structure for most of them, while being in poverty. So they end up "learning" cultural behaviors that are more violent than what the other families in the US are used to. But that's a coping mechanism of the tough life they are having, always being suspected of being a potential criminal, thief, murderer... that look is heavy and therefore, they are paranoid every time a situation occurs. Hence, their impulsive reaction especially in the corporate world that makes them look violent. And they probably are, if they can't internalize their thought like most people when they are frustrated by someone's comment.
Is that related to the color of their skin though? That would not be right in my opinion. I grew up my whole childhood in Africa as a foreigner. Over there, you have plenty of kids that learn very early the value of respecting elders, respecting each others, and being ethical. People help each others too. Is it crime free? No, and some countries are famous for being dangerous, but most people have the same social values as in anywhere else in the world.
Therefore something in the social setup in the United States has made most of the Black people get this image and this behavior. I think that's what needs to be addressed. Whatever it is, they need to figure this out and address it and stop being binary.
