Read the article. It's clear why the politicians enacted this law even. It's precisely because it can be selectively enforced and used as leverage when the need arises. I wouldn't be surprised if this was just another way to leverage campaign donations.

Quote:
Less than 24 hours after New York City’s new pay transparency law went into effect on Nov. 1, companies had already found a way to circumvent its core requirement.

Rather than giving the public an inside glimpse of what employees all over the city were earning, many companies opted to post overly broad salary ranges, making it impossible to extrapolate anything at all about workers’ salaries.

Salaries for New York City-based tech jobs at Amazon were listed by the company at a range of $88,400-$185,000 per year. International consulting firm Deloitte, one of the city’s largest employers, listed salary ranges between $86,800 and $161,200. Postings on The Wall Street Journal sought reporters and producers with years of experience but listed salary ranges between $40,000-$160,000. Citigroup’s postings, however, took the cake – listing multiple job openings with a range between $0-$2 million.

A spokesperson for Citigroup later clarified that the eye-popping posting had been caused by a computer glitch. The revised entry showed a salary range between $59,340.00 and $149,320.00.

so if you are looking for a job, just ask for the top end of the salary range when applying for the job. Simple as.

You can ask for whatever you like …but it does not mean you will get it .

Sales jobs in the company i do some work for in retirement , range from about 50-60k to 225k .

It all depends what you are bringing to the party as far as business and knowledge.

Many low end jobs anyone can do may have a specific pay but more skilled jobs likely will have a range based on your experience, knowledge and or business following

At my work, they started to post pay transparency this way: "Position is from 85K - 175K." Then followed by the wording, "Compensation is determined by work experience, education, skill level, and other factors"

It’s easier to pass a useless law, than say fight crime.

It’s a knowingly selectively enforced leverage mechanism against whomever the incumbent politicians want to leverage it against.

These woke laws aren’t gonna work, if enforced it will destroy the economy and cause hiring freezes as well as shift jobs away from NYC as it already started with covid19.

I wouldn't call it a woke law. Usually I disagree with NYC political laws but in rare instances they make sense. For example, the Bloomberg era law to ban smoking inside bars and restaurants. I remember people screaming how it would kill businesses. Ugh. No thanks. Some of us don't like inhaling second hand smoke and smelling like an ashtray.
