student looking for a bank to open an account in Manhattan
Hello,
I am moving to Midtown/LES of Manhattan in a few days. I would like to open a student account soon once I am there. What are some of popular banks among students in Manhattan? Thanks.

One thing you will have absolutely no trouble finding in Manhattan is a bank. There's practically one on every corner that isn't occupied by a drug store. I haven't been a student in ages. The bank I used when I came to NYC in the '60s, Bankers Trust, doesn't even exist any more.
What the banks have been doing is ridiculous -- renting the real estate to prevent competitors from putting a face in the neighborhood. Most of them are overextended. It will be interesting to see how many of these excess branches close as the economy continues to slide.

I read that Chase has the least amount of fees that they will ding you with if you run afoul of their rules.

Don't know about that but with Chase you have one of the best opportunities not to be charged ATM fees since Chase has branches all over the place and their ATM is in all of the Duane Reade stores. For checking, if you don't have alot of money, it is best to have Direct Deposit with Chase and they will not charge you for the account.

I would suggest Commerce or Washington Mutual for a student. They have the least amount of fees and tons of ATMs throughout the city and tri-state area.
Chase does have the most amount of ATMs but they have a large number of fees. Very much like Wachovia.

This is true.. having a lot of banks just gives them the opportunity to take advantage of people since it's in more places. I'm not saying this is true, but basing your choice on just that isn't a very good idea.
