Why do people in Astoria refer to the N/W as "the Yellow Line"? (New York: crime, transfer to)

I've never heard anyone call it the Yellow Line. but out of curiosity I googled it and there's this which seems very very strange
"The N and W subway trains bring life to Astoria. The “yellow line” as many locals from Astoria have dubbed it, runs above ground from Ditmars Boulevard to Queens Borough Plaza."
It wouldn't work anyway since the colored "lines" branch out into multiple lines. Calling subway lines the (pick a color) line is a Boston, DC, or L.A. thing....
But yeah, I've never heard anyone calling NYC subways by the color, it's always the "1 train", the "N train", etc.

I've never heard anyone refer to the train lines by color. Now I have heard and myself included still refer to the lines as the IND, IRT, BMT, but that's old timers talk.
Anybody who refers to any subway line in this city by color is not originally from NYC. I'm not even being funny. That's your answer. They simply don't know any better.
Yeah a good friend of mine from Colombia did that with the Lex line years ago when he moved to Manhattan after college. We were out somewhere in the City eating and he was talking about going somewhere and used that term. I gave him a WTF look and laughed.
Did you ever take the wrong train at the time they switched the D & B? I did it once, getting on the B when i now needed the D!

I think all us "B" train riders had done that at least once when the train switch was implemented.
I did that also, so don't feel bad.
Lucky for me I live close to Coney Island, so I took it all the way to the end and switched back, lucky I was going in that direction and not the other way, that would not have of been fun
