The Bronx no Longer Burning - or so says the Post and the Times
Check out this article from the Post
MAYOR BLOOMBERG PRESENTS SOUTH BRONX INITIATIVE - New York Post
On another weird news note, there was a NY Times reporter in my lobby (in Bedford Park) doing research for a 'Living In' article for this Sunday's Times. That should be nice press for little unloved and unrecognized (but very green and residential) Bedford Park.
Pete Piper, I thought you'd be interested in the Times thing.

Well, all these changes are very good, and I truly do hope that they have a positive effect on the neighborhoods that they're taking place in. Now, to get rid of all the garbage around the 4 train....

These initiatives have been happening for a few years already. This is nothing new...as the South Bronx is making a HUGE comeback, and is being repositioned as the only source for the working/middle class in the city. Affordable housing intiatives, including rentals, condos, coops and multifamilies are happening across the area, as are market rate luxury housing of all kinds. New amenities are coming into the area, some mainstream like Rite Aids, Target, Marshalls, Foreman Mills, etc..as well as local amenities like restaurants, bars, and lounges (yes good sushi is already in Mott Haven also!)
In just 3-5 years, when the new university, much of the new green housing, luxury condos, waterfront parks, upgraded infrastructure, new Metro-North Station, new retail/restaurants/bars, new stadium, new hotel, and intensive greening initiatives are completed, the South Bronx will look and feel very different than what it is today. At this point the area is all upside..and the quality of life increases on pretty much a weekly basis.
Not sure what garbage you are referring to around the 4 train..unless you mean the relentless drunks that swarm the 4 train on their way to Yankee Stadium. They are building a new stadium, so the drunks who litter and crowd the trains will only grow.

Thanks for the link, Luchador. The Bronx is definately on its way up. I don't know the South Bronx very well, but it's obvious that there are so many revitalization efforts going on there and that huge progress has already been made. As for our neighborhood, Bedford Park, I find it to be a great place to live--and would recommend it especially for those to whom green space is important. I actually think everywhere in the city where you don't need a car will get more and more valuable, as you obviously save lots of money these days without one.

Well, everytime I go to 167th St. or Mt. Eden, there's just piles of garbage around the train station, and you can smell it from a block away.. maybe I just go on the "unlucky" days, but by the looks of it, it seems like it's an everyday problem.

That may be a problem with a lack of appropriate trash cans...as the South Bronx inparticular still has too few garbage cans...causing many of the problems you see. However, this too is being addressed.

Why hasn't the term "The Bronx is burning" been extinguished yet? I had no idea it was still used today? I thought the south Bronx was bad back in the 70s and 80s. Are there still a lot of vacant lots?
Where I work in the south Bronx, there's a lot of garbage, but no vacant lots or anything. They clean up the garbage eventually during the day, but it still isn't nearly as bad as I expected it to be when I first took the job.
I honestly think he should spend this money towards education instead. The Bronx is ok for now and can wait a few years for this.
