New York City is on track to have fewer than 500 homicides this year, by far the lowest number in a 12-month period since reliable Police Department statistics became available in 1963.
But within the city’s official crime statistics is a figure that may be even more striking: so far, with roughly half the killings analyzed, only 35 were found to be committed by strangers, a microscopic statistic in a city of more than 8.2 million.Moderator cut: copyrighted material
2007 was the lowest crime rate in the city in the last 40 years by the way. 2008 is on track to be yet another record reduction in crime. Despite what all the naysayers, cop haters, racists, and thugs would have you believe in these forums, NYC is safe and becoming safer everyday.
um, that article is from last year. homicides have gone up sharply in 2008 due to the weak economy. a lot of my friends here are getting worried about the decline in quality of life and are deeply concerned that the city will go back to the 70's and 80's.

i agree. there has been a sharp decline in crime here. the cops, and the city are doing a great job. most people wont admit it because they need something to complain about. new york is getting safer. in the 1990s you wouldn't want to walk around at night, but now its not to bad.
Hopefully it lasts in 2009, but who would be surprised if this is the end of this magical run. Bloomberg cancelled the next NYPD academy class; count on more cuts down the road, and lots behind the scenes that you won't even know about.
