I wouldn't go so far as to call New York a "playground for the rich." Manhattan can be, in some places. But not the whole city. The rents are pretty insane, however, you can get by on a middle-class salary in the outer boroughs with a roommate and some local knowledge.
Now, regarding things to do, there's actually plenty to do on NYC, even Manhattan, on the cheap - provided, of course, that you don't insist upon frequenting only the hippest and trendiest spots (but, on that count, the same would go for most cities). There's plenty of good, cheap-to-moderate, restaurants, plenty of events around town that you can check out for free, or close to it, and plenty of decent bars where a night out won't cost a fortune. You just need to know where to look.
