Sure we need to offer a better compensation package; however, we need to raise entry level and continuing standards as so eloquently described by bmw. I endorse the scaled educational requirements suggested by bmw.

We need a better salary/to enhance educational backgrounds/to weed out the undesirables and create a culture of service to the public by all cops not with some feeling that they are in a time capsule back in the 1800's Wild West

Many live in Jersey? NYPD has residency requirements. Either NYC, Long Island, Westchester, Rockland, Orange or Putnam Counties.

And, the FDNY and NYPD should be encouraged to live in the city by tax abatements, low cost mortgages, and other programs to make it more affordable. Other cities have used this policy to get police officers to move into areas that might be a little unstable. With a family, it's not as easy, since good schools might not be available in some transitional areas, but for singles and married couples, this could be a good bridge to affordability and a mechanism by which the neighborhood would become more stable. FDNY should be included in this as well, especially with all that they do for the city. Again, this should be an optional perk for those who choose to avail themselves of it, but if an FDNY or NYPD member wants to live in Rockland, Putnam, Westchester, or on the Island, that's not a problem either.

I'm thinking about joining the NYPD. But what if I don't want to be in there for 20 years +? What if I just want to be a police for maybe 3-5 years...? Can I do that? Seriously though.

I wonder how much it costs to train an NYPD officer. I've heard $100k. Probably wrong, but interesting to find out.
