You still have to deal with the Grant and Manhattanville projects on 125th (though this is west Harlem). But the closer to central park the better, I agree.

Although I was on 100th and Manhattan ave (near the Frederick Douglass and Amsterdam houses) and it looked kind of rough.

I lived caddycorner to the Grant projects for a little more than a year and never had any inkling of a problem. I was on the side closest to Columbia (123rd and Amsterdam area). I had to walk by them late at night sometimes from the subway also. Maybe other sides of that project were rougher...I have no idea. The blocks right around there are even patrolled by Columbia/Barnard security once you hit 122nd St. or Morningside Drive (or Avenue...whichever one is west of Morningside Park). Everything west of Morningside Park and south of 123rd has a completely different feel than everything east and north.

this story is crazy. Last friday i was on my way to virginia and we stopped a supermarket on 125 st at 1 am right I was in the car then all of a sudden i see a cop car with two cops running out of the car taking out their guns and aim it in from of them then more and more started coming with guns. It was scary because you dont know in the next minute you can die. Then the cops came back with two people. Later. Cops came out of a near by subway with another two men. But as soon as they do the rezoning crime will lower because the city aimed at the nightlife on 125 so they will have more people at night insuring their safety.

Harlem hands down and I don't even like Harlem! Sure you'll probably get more bang for your buck in terms of size on the GC but the GC is just one very long stretch of trash. You can move to perhaps 170th-174th, Tremont, 167th. 161th and be in Manhattan in a short time but for the most part, I'd go with Harlem. You'll be in Manhattan already and be in the lower parts of Manhattan very shortly. Plus, there's just simply a whole lot more that Harlem offers in comparison. Freak the GC and do the Harlem shake.

Agreed, most of Grand Concourse is awful. The nicer parts of it are in the area near Yankee Stadium and the Hub and even that is nowhere near as nice as Harlem in terms of amenities.
