Default You want tress and NYC but aren't rich: Where are you moving to?

Where are you 30-50k a year people moving to?
The Bronx? Sunset Park?

Where are you finding some of the diversity and sophistication you love about NYC, but with some trees and parks? And somewhat affordable rents?

And access to the city---by train, bus, boat, goat or donkey?

Inwood in north Manhattan. You can still find affordable rents, large apt space and diversity...although "east of Broadway" is mostly populated by Hispanics (Dominicans). And yes, there's plenty of trees... Ft. Tryon Park and Inwood Hill Park are all within short distance. Buses and two subway lines are easily accessible.

Yet... I recently moved to Bedford Park in the Bronx and like that it's more "quiet" than Inwood (at least less congested).

A lot of Queens is affordable. I just moved to Sunnyside and I really am enjoying it here. I also have easy access to Manhattan on the 7.

Kew Gardens is close to Flushing Meadows-Corona in Queens.

And, as Pete Piper and Danabbw67 have pointed out, parts of Bedford Park in the Bronx are close to the Botanical Gardens and zoo, and some stretches have older growth trees and medians along Mosholu Parkway.

Parts of Kingsbridge/Riverdale are also close to Van Cortlandt Park, the Broadway side, though the rents pick up when you hit Riverdale on Broadway. Some of the side streets west of Broadway (W231 St and above) also have a good number of trees, and many private houses.

You're also close to Yonkers at this stretch of Broadway as the #1 subway ends at the city line, and Van Cortlandt Park is convenient as well, though the neighborhood itself might not be as leafy as other parts of the general area.

Woodlawan is also close to parts of Yonkers that are similar to Woolawn itself, though usually at a lower price point.

Harlem. Well, I'm not sure there are any more trees here than elsewhere in the City. But there are trees up and down my block and I'm 2 blocks to a park...

Bay Ridge in Brooklyn is also affordable, safe, and attractive, and no further from Manhattan than Riverdale.

Astoria. We have a beautiful park right on the river and nice views of Manhattan. Lots of trees especially by Ditmars. And it's very diverse. Very close to Manhattan, and it's affordable but rent has been increasing lately.

Jackson Heights.

Default The Bronx is Green

I think the Bronx is known to have the most greenspace of all the boroughs. And the NYC Parks and Recreation is slated to pump $400 million into the borough in the very near future. I live in Parkchester (www.parkchesternyc.com) which has tons of trees, flowers, "great lawns", a beautiful fountain in the center, etc. Wonderful diversity. And it is just a short bus ride to the Bronx Botanical Garden and The Bronx Zoo. (There are also nice areas even closer to the Garden within walking distance. The Garden is free on Saturdays if you arrive between 10 and 12:00, so it is a great way to start your day) And for affordability (at least for now) the Bronx beats most parts of the other boroughs in my opinion.
