I've found an apt/loft rental on S.5th Street between Bedford & Driggs right by the Williamsburg Bridge. The closer train station is the JMZ Marcy and quite a walk from the Bedford L where I had originally wanted to rent near.

Because I haven't lived or even quite know this area at all, how safe is this specific area? I might've seen one or two of the proclaimed ''hipsters'' but mostly it was not. Now I definitely know all about the area near Bedford L, but how much of a difference is there? What about the JMZ Marcy, how safe is that station, say coming home at 2am in the morning?

Thank you all!

There is a huge difference between the North Side and the South Side of Williamsburg but the South Side is still not as problematical as Bushwick,Bed Stuy, etc. You should be OK for the most part but be careful walking around at 2 am.Before you sign, you should go there at 2 am on a Saturday or Sunday morning and walk around( from subway to apartment ,etc) to see how it feels if you will be doing that with any regularity.

Hopefully the rent is a lot less than places on the North Side because it should be.

That area is along the borderline of Bed-stuy, Bushwick and Southside... Its alot better than what it used to be 20 years ago... but thats pretty much all of NYC and that area is still kinda sketchy... I agree with bluedog on this one that if anything just check the area for yourself to see how it is... Only then can you make an opinion on how is this neighborhood for you...

I lived around there for a while...S8 Street. Never had a problem, never felt threatened. It looks like a run-down East European country, but other than that there isn't much wrong with it.
