I"m looking to attend a conference later in October in mid-town. Many hotels appear to be booked and it's hard to tell which *ahem* "affordable" hotels are good and which aren't.

So someone suggested a vacation rental. I'll only need a space for 4 nights, but could extend that if I need to (who wouldn't take an extra day or two in NY) or just pay for the full week if need be. I've noticed some vacation rentals will rent to you on a 4 day minimum, so that would work too.

BUT......

...does anyone have any insight as to which vacation rental companies are any good? Are any of them reliable? Does anyone from the city have any local companies or properties that they are familiar with that they'd suggest?

My conference is at the Jacob Javits center, but I'm not necessarily looking only in that area. I have no problem walking or taking the subway to get there. I guess the only geographical restriction I'd put on this is that I would like to stay in Manhattan as opposed to being on Long Island or even over in Jersey, purely for convenience sake.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I've used VRBO.com, cyberrentals.com & vacationrentals.com
But I haven't used them in the NYC area obviously

Thanks NYN.
Do you find that the web information pretty fairly represents what you get when you arrive at the rental location? VRBO seems to be one of the more extensive listings.

Yes I do. Never had a surprise.
But I do A LOT of research on the area & I only rent houses that have posted multiple photos of the property, esp the interior. If there's a house I like that doesn't have photos, I ask for more.

Um, also, I just googled 'brooklyn hotel' & there's a ton of hotels with availability in Oct. Name brands too: Holiday Inn, Best Western, Marriott, Comfort Inn. Brooklyn is really convenient to Manhattan, you should check it out.
