After few months of are we or aren't we moving, my husband has finally been given the approval to work in stamford. Once we move we'll check most areas mentioned on this thread especially larchmont, mamaroneck, rye etc. so thank you once again to everyone who contributed. Am still v.nervous but have been thinking about it for so long can't wait for it to happen now! It would be so wonderful to live in manhattan but as his office isn't actually based in manhattan, it would be too much on him to do that commute. shame but after long hard think it's best this way. I should have kept my job at bloomberg and then i could have had an excuse to live in the city
I just had a couple of questions if anyone would know the answer. If we found somewhere affordable in Larchmont, would my husband be able to cycle to stamford? Is it 20 miles or so? And would you need a car or could we walk most places? And does anyone know of any pre-schools that have languages - for instance an italian school - anywhere in westchester?

thanks again

While you COULD manage without a car in Larchmont, I don't recommend it. You need a car in Westchester, even if only to get to White Plains and the Galleria. Cycling to Stamford would be exceptionally dangerous, not to mention exhausting. This is not exactly a cycling-friendly area on the main roads.

You might want to post on the Westchester board.
