Can anyone identify which Jewish style delicatessen restaurants are left in Manhattan? I know we have Katz's on Houston and Ludlow, the Carnegie and the Stage on 7th Ave in the 50's, but I miss Wolf's on 57th and 6th which closed and may have moved further east on 57th--looked like part vegetarian when i last inquired. Other similar places like Ben Ash's on 7th across from the Carnegie/Stage and another one on 7th and 51 st. Also sorely miss Kaplan's on 47th street(last 1989) and another one on 47th street I can't recall the name(does anyone know?). We had Orloff's on 66 and Bway--gone. We still have Ben's on 38th between 7th/8th.
I've eaten at several others in the past and fear they're no longer there--on 7th Avenue near 28th street in the early 90's, a place on Lexington and 52 street, on 6th Ave between 56th and 57th(last 1997), Madison Ave and 38th street--anyone know their names and if they're still there now?
The Carnegie is not authentic by any stretch of the imagination. Quite the contrary, it's more like a stereotype. The closest thing to an old-fashioned Jewish deli in Manhattan is Katz's. (Ben Ash, across the street from the Carnegie, is pretty good, by the way!)
