Hey all, i'm just curious how the safe is it to drink tap water in NY. A friend of mine usually drinks from the tap water without any concern but i'm a little more worried. Is it safe to drink tap water here? I live in Brooklyn (Bushwick to be more specific)) btw.

You assume New York City water is bad, but in fact, it's quite good! The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) rigorously tests the city's tap water and reports their findings to the public annually.

New York City's water supplies are virtually lead-free. There is the possibility that lead can leach into water from old plumbing, but sampling indicates that the vast majority of NYC taps produce water containing only minute, insignificant quantities of lead (if any)

I haven't had to use my Brita pitcher at all - the tap water tastes just like the filtered stuff to me.

Eight million people call this city home. If there was something wrong with the tap water, you wouldn't just see a few cases of illness; you'd see an epidemic!

As a matter of fact, there's a guy who fills huge bottles of New York City tapwater, airlifts them to California, and sells the stuff. (I guess someone had to be the first to think of doing this.)

New York has the best tap water of any big city. There's a possibility of contamination from your building's pipes itself though.

But I live in a 100 year old building and don't need a filter.

Personally I would never drink right from the tap. I always use a filter. We might have the best tap water or whatever but to me it still taste funny unfiltered and you have to let it run for a while before it comes out clear. No thank you. I'll stick to the filtered stuff.

I trust NYC's water supply. I just don't trust my building's plumbing. I also stick to the filtered stuff.

I'd use a filter. Just in case. It's not that expensive unless you use your sink to fill your indoor pool.

I am with you 100%. New York has THE best tap water in the US (apart from mountain communities in Colorado like Aspen/Vail who get direct snow fed mountain water). Most people assume the water is not clean since it is pressurised and comes out cloudy when poured directly into a glass from the tap (but it clears up in seconds).

NYC tap water is good. If you want you can boil it first before drinking as an extra precaution.
