Is the area around 145 and Frederick Douglass safe for 2 white female students? It seems the area has been built-up but how safe would it be for us to be walking at 9:00 pm? or ealry in the morning? Any advice would be greatful...how noisy is this area at night?

I would say on average its more dangerous for the average Black or Hispanic male at 9 P.M than a White female.

Much of the crime in the area tends to black-on-black (or, in this case, brown-on-brown). That's a fairly busy area and, IMHO, not necessarily the best place to live. Do you have other options?

if you have a choice go to 115th and frederick douglas. i know both areas well. 115th is safer, you have to be careful late at night in both areas. you have to take the necessary precautions concerning safety in both areas.

115th is a lot more diverse. there is a lot more interaction, and communication in general among the people in neighborhood, race and ethnicity doesn't matter as much, if at all, when it comes to interaction in this area. 115th offers you both morningside park and central park. there are a lot of students in the area, from columbia. good luck.

115th is one of the best areas in Harlem, but Nooyorker hit it on the nail with his post earlier, so I would personally go with 145 in your shoes because im sure its cheaper.

i'm not debating but the nicer apts are in the 145th st area are not that much cheaper, if at all, than
115th st if she has a choice. i don't think she would want to live in the not so nice sections.

also she stated they are 2 female white students. there are a lot more white students of both sexes around 115th and 8th, and just students period, i am just being blunt because she does state this upfront in her post. this may be better socially for the op. there is also a post office right on 116th, along with a ups store near 120th this makes it really convenient.

also the 115th area is quieter at night and there are many people out exercising early in the morning going to and from central park.

it is a much better vibe for a student, especially a young woman . there are also a few good restaurants on 8th where students eat and hang out. there is also an internet cafe on 110th bet 8th and manhattan where more students hang out.

lets face it if anyone that has a choice chooses 145th and 8th ave, over 115th and 8th ave, there must be a significant cost factor involved, and they are not living in one of the nicer buildings.
