Even in those towns (Ridgefield, Secaucus, Bergenfield, etc) in NJ, you're not going to find a 2BR for $1k or less, unless you go to the bad part of Newark or something.

You should see my grandmother's two bedrooms in her four family house! I would be shocked if they went for more than $1000/month. It's clean and safe, but small and needs updating. That's what the OP needs.

Yes. There are deals. I was a landlord once. A legal two family. I would not charge high rent and not increase it very much if the tenant would take care of small repairs themselves and was no trouble. I would not have a lease because if the tenant was bad I would just raise the rent to get rid of them.

Neighbors asked me how I got such good tenants - no secret - if you treat MOST people well, they reciprocate.

The problem is, I would post the appt on the bulletin board at work and I usually got tenants through that or by word of mouth. I guess I was a bad business person but I was willing to leave the appt vacant until I was happy with a selection.

Sometimes I posted in the local penny saver.

I just read on the NJ board that someone just signed a lease for a two bedroom in Bayonne, NJ for 900/month--utilities not included--near the light rail in a cute neighborhood.

My friend lives in Bayonne, NJ. An attic apt. Not very plesant i must say but she pays 800.00 a month and it would be doable for a single mom and two kids, although tight.
It is possible.

1000 for a 2bd is hard to find in NYC. i pay under 1000 for a 2bdrm in Manhattan, but thats only because i got it through a lottery/affordable housing.
you can fine maybe a 1bd under 1000k in some parts of Queens and the BX

You are also going to be extremely hard pressed to find a 2 bedroom for $1000 in Chicago. Generally, anything you find under $1300 is going to be in an undesirable neighborhood where you wouldn't want to raise your kids, or 1hr+ from the Loop. I'm sure it can be done if you look hard enough, though.
(I know this is the NYC forum, just responding to the other half of the OP's question)

No, Staten Island doesn't smell. (sheesh)

I just quickly checked the real estate listings on www.silive.com and 2 bedrooms on the northern half of the island seem to run about $1,000 to $1,500. Most you pay your own utilities. You could also probably get by with a large 1 bedroom. Give the bedroom to the kids, and get a pull out couch for you.

Getting to midtown would take between 90 - 120 minutes, dowtown would be less to 90, all dependent on traffic. (You get used to it.). You can take an express bus or local bus/ferry/subway or walk.
