My fiance and I are about to sign a lease (currently we are on the west coast) on an apartment right by Knickenbocker and Dekalb. Right in between the L train- DeKalb, and M- Myrtle?

I have heard bad things about JMZ, true, but I am jus concerned with this exact area, and if its safe for young females. What is the border for this "East Willimasburg" I know for regualr Williamsburg it is Flushing? The owner said it was what would become E. Williamsburg too. Any feedback greatly appreciated. I cant get out there to see before we sign.

Personally I wouldnt do it. I grew up in Bushwick when it was the crack capital in the 80s and 90's. Knickerbocker ave in particular was known as "the well" for an endless suplly of drugs.Obviously like most places its not as bad as it was but its not exactly a neighborhood where middle class families are looking to move into to raise kids. What ive noticed about a lot of NYC owners nowadays is that they will tell out of towners anything to move them in. Like name dropping for instance mentioning neighboring areas that have better reputations such as Williamsburg or Clinton hills.
To give u a west coast equivalent, i would compare it to inglewood; its not the worst, its getting better, but still a place with a lot of poor folks, bad schools, some drug activity, really dirty and some undersirables hanging out. For all intents and purposes u should be ok as adults but again one of the spots where u need to keep ur head up.
Now with all that said, u will see some people on here swear up and down how great it is and how nothing has happened to them, ect... Best for u is just to check the NYPD website, look up the 83rd precinct and see how Bushwick compares in crime to the rest of the city.
Again, not the worst place on earth, but for the bad parking, the annoying commute to Manhatten, the likelihood of mice and the stigma of the neighborhood in general, nahh no thanks. Been there done that.

Nope I dont. Sent a deposit over, on a place and the woman took off. Now I have no extra chunck of money and travel reservations with me relocating on this date. So its not going to be easy to find a new place.

I live a few blocks from that corner, but I can't say I know it specifically. But don't freak out. This isn't the 80s or 90s. yes it was bad then: riots, burnt out buildings, etc. but this is 2009 and time changes things rapidly in nyc. Bushwick was recently poised to follow in the footsteps of Williamsburg. Williamsburg was pretty nasty back then too, but rents were cheap so the artists that got priced out of Manhattan started moving in there because they could get giant loft and studio spaces for nothing. And now it's the hip, white, fluffy epicenter of trendy Brooklyn. As those things go, once Williamsburg became considered cool and hip, the artists and folk who made it that way again got priced out, so Bushwick was the next destination. It was starting to feel like Williamsburg from a few years ago, right before the 'hipsters' and trend followers found it. Then the recession hit.

So that's kinda where it's at now. "Up and coming" you could say, but not too fast. I guess it would be easier to tell you if you would like the neighborhood if you told us more about you and your fiance. What are you moving to NY for? Passions, pursuits, hobbies, etc? Bushwick is a great place for artists, musicians, actors, etc. Lot of creative people in the neighborhood. lots of fun to be had too. Not a place to raise a family, but not a bad landing pad for a move. The thing about nyc is you can always move to another neighborhood next year.

I mean, yeah, Bushwick isn't a 'safe' neighborhood. But you're not going to be wandering around at 4 am hopefully. Gang members shoot at other gang members and they tend to not bother me. So the positive side means rent is cheap, the yuppies havent invaded and theres also a lot of really great, gritty, 'old new york' stuff. Oh and it's like 15 minutes to mahattan by train. Not a bad commute at all. I don't know about driving but this is nyc you don't need a car.

oh and welcome and all that. if you need eggs or sugar or have any questions let me know.

Sorry-
You're awesome thank you for the really specific response.

A bit about us I am Polish, and my fiance is Norwegian, but we live and work in the film industry in LA. We have decided for NY because I lived there when I was muccchhh younger, and I love to visit Brooklyn often. However, I can no longer comofortably afford some of the places where I maybe used to be able to afford. haha.
So I want to be around creative people, whatever their gender, race ect. But key word is creative. I am an actor and he is a filmmaker. So yea, we want to be around the same "alike" people. We also want to be around good community(again whoever that is, that maybe share our interests) so thats awesome if you say there are tons of artist types around? That is a really good thing for me to hear.
I do have a small dog, ha I want her to be safe in the evenings when I walk her, and I like unpolished places, but i also want to personally just be SAFE. ya know?
We are also both 24, and pretty quiet, eccentric people. :-) But fun too definetly NOT reallyyyyyyy kid friendly either, lol.

<<Does any of this sound like it would fit? ha

Totally! Yeah I think you'd fit right in then. Bushwick isn't for someone who want's a penthouse condo and works on wallstreet and needs a nanny to raise their kid. Young filmmakers, yeah you'll do fine. Keep your wits when you're out at night walking the dog, but that's the routine just about anywhere in new york.
