It got worse today - the entire dialysis department was closed and 300 more lay offs.

The dialysis department is not closed. you cannot have a hospital without dialysis. the nephrology training program has been closed.

You misunderstand: a hospital must treat all emergent, acute illnesses. And then they bill you and can attach your property and bank accounts and put a lien on your home if you don't pay.

If the matter is not urgent, they do NOT have to treat a patient.

Dialysis is closed. Patients are being sent to other hospitals.

"NYU Medical Center is nowhere near St. Vincent's. It's just about alone on the lower WEST side. Further downtown is New York-Downtown (formerly Beekman Downtown)...but on the West Side there's St. Clare's (a hospital that fills me with trepidation)."

Actually St. Clare's closed a couple years ago. Roosevelt Hospital is in that general vicinity at 10th Ave and 59th...not a trauma center like St. Vinnie's but a good hospital with an excellent staff.
