If I had my choice I'd take Riverdale over Inwood anyday, Inwood is getting pricey and mostly Hispanic now. Riverdale you can still get a condo or coop
for under $500,000. Great schools....parks.........can get to Manhatten on Metro North or express bus.

My wife and I lived in Manhattan for 6 1/2 years and have been in now for little over a year. We moved here from NC though were originally from Detroit area.
Get rid of the car. You can rent one on occasion if you need it. Also check out Bay Ridge Brooklyn in addition to Astoria Queens.
Also realize that a one bedroom in Manhattan would be smaller than a one bedroom in NC. My mom lives in a two bedroom apt. in Marion NC for 450 a month. It is gigantic compared to what you will get in the city.
If you want to do it, you can but realize that you will be sacrificing in terms of space and convenience. Believe me, many New Yorkers do more work just getting to and from work than many people do all day at work.
That said, moving here was the best move we could have made.
Good luck
PM if you like.
