Hi there,

I am planning to move into the states for work from Hong Kong and I would like to know if I could find a flat in New York City as close to Manhattan as possible as it is the central area if I'm not wrong. I am looking to find a place that will cost about $1000 - $1300. Is there anywhere that can accommodate? I would preferably like a 1 bed/ 1 bath apartment but wouldn't mind paying the same amount for a flat share if it is on Manhattan Island.

Are there any good websites you can recommend that don't add commission to the rent?

Cheers.

For that price in Manhattan, you will probably need about 2 or more roommates to share with. Your best bet if you want a 1-bedroom would be to move out to the outer boroughs like Queens. But even so, you will probably need to increase your budget a little for a nice 1-bedroom in a good area.

Just curious, Hong Kong is a expensive city to live in - do you live on your own right now in HK? If so, you should be able to afford a more expensive place in NYC than $1,000.

I am currently a student in the UK and I am planning my career and the rest of my life before i finish this year. I will be living with my parents for a while as soon as I go back to HK.

What is queens like? I know this question may sound very broad but like all cities there are areas that have a certain characteristic to them

Cheers.

The most common way to find an apartment in NYC is via the Craigslist website. They have a section for housing, and it's sub-divided into different catagories, including one for Rooms/Shared.

I think your budget is too small for a 1BR in Manahttan, and probably even for a studio apartment, but it might be nice for you to have a roommate, since you'll be new to the city, and since you're quite young.

Do you have a job already? Are you an American citizen? If the answer is 'no' to both questions, you can't just 'move to the US.' You probably know that, but you have no idea how many people DON'T.

I would be very hesitant about those rentals. And it's 'ManhattAn' - with three 'a's.
