We have 2 girls 2 and 7 and like a few we are moving from Atlanta to Brooklyn this summer. Anyway, the whole car thing is driving me crazy. I can do without a car but am worried about the kids and little things like bringing the cats to the vet.
Do you need a car to generate income? If not, sell it. The money you save on car related expenses can spend on a very nice family vacation each year. Many doctors and vets don't provide parking for customers.
If you're far out in Brooklyn, you will want to keep the car. And, I know people with no kids, but dogs, who keep a small Mini near their house, which is very close-in. It's an expense, and if you do not have parking at your new house, then I would recommend finding a garage, since it can be less expensive than inevitable parking tickets and random acts of vandalism that can happen in even the best neighborhoods.
ETA: The car comes in handy for running errands, and out to Queens or nearby areas of Long Island for recreational opportunities, etc. But, look at the increased costs and judge whether or not it is necessary for your family. It's certainly convenient, but you could also join ZipCar if you don't mind a car sharing service, and rent for longer trips.

This is all great info. I think it is pretty much a done deal. We are going to sell the cars!
Let go of the whole car thing. I still have mine and I’m finally on the verge of getting rid of it and joining zip cars. I still pay for the monthly metro card and favor public transportation rather than fighting for a legal parking spot every time I take the car out. It’s become so bad that I hate to even use my car if I’m in a good parking spot close to home, how ridiculous is that!!!
