I had to laugh over this. I can't believe this is an article. They really needed "experts" for this?

Rodent expert shines light on rats in NYC subways - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100615/ap_on_re_us/us_rats_in_the_subway - broken link)

Copyright issue: OK to post a link to the article and a snippet from it in quotes (a couple of sentences), not the entire text. Thanks.

It's not a laughing matter. Rats create a serious health issue. I used to take courses from a leading NYC Exterminator who had a Ph.D in Rodent Control. Dr. Advani was his name,I didn't know at the time that once could get a Ph.D in that.

I'm not questioning rats as a health problem: It clearly is. Yet the conclusion (rats living with trash) was so obvious to me that I had to wonder why it was considered newsworthy.

I see them in the tracks all the time but families of 8 - 12 rats living in cinderblocks like apartment houses behind the tiles ... wow, who knew???
I hardly ever see those platform notices about rat poisoning anymore. Have budget cuts in the MTA reduced the treatments?

The MTA should close the Subway for a few hrs and release some pythons underground with tracking devices to eat the growing Population. How Come the PATH is so clean? It runs 24/7...

I've had rats and mice jump up on the platform quite close to me. They are NOT afraid of people at all. And, they are huge. As broke as this city is, anything they do to reduce the population is OK by me.

Yeah, LexWest, it is funny that anyone would need an "expert" to draw those conclusions. The fact of the matter is, human beings are the best thing that ever happened to rats. Just look at all the wonderful accommodations we provide for them! And protected from most of their natural enemies, as well.
