Hallo

I will be starting work in midtown Manhattan in a month and thought I would reach out for help. I am looking for an area within 1 hour commute and that has good elementary schools. I was looking at Long Island, Astoria, Park Slope... and someone just told me living in NY would cost me an extra 3% in income tax. I am a single mom and can only afford up to $2300 in rent a month.

Thank you in advance for all your help

Do you want to live in within New York City more or the suburbs? Do you work on the west or east side of midtown?

I suggest you consider Forest Hills in Queens.

I second Forest Hills, Queens. Many ways to get to the city: E train, F train, R train, V train, LIRR, a few express buses as well a the Q60 bus if you don't like having to go underground.

Forest Hills has shops, houses, mediocre buildings, luxury buildings, co-ops and condos, churches and synagogues, activities, restaurants, etc.

And last but not least, good public schools.

In no particular order:

-Astoria (Queens)
-Forest Hills (Queens)
-Bayridge (Brooklyn)
-Park Slope (Brooklyn)

Thank you ALL for your help. I have also just been told to look into Northern Jersey (Summit area schools).... any thoughts? I would like to be as conservative as possible ($ spent on rent), but at the same time not compromise my children's education. Am willing to settle for up to 1.5hrs commute.
@OrangeHudson, I will be on Eastside of midtown.

What about southern Orange County communities like Monroe or Woodbury? Perhaps Putnam County too.
