Using the advice of a more experienced member (thank you) I reworded my title and am resending this question? My husband and I are thinking of moving from NJ to Sullivan County. How are these towns as far as safety, schools (we have a 10 year old), shopping and are there any bike trails close by? Any other towns in Sullivan County you would recommend?
Thanks
I live in Sullivan County about 10 miles from Liberty. When you say "shopping," I am assuming that you don't mean food shopping. Sullivan County does not have a shopping mall. Many people go down to the malls in Middletown, NY to do their shopping where you'll find a Macy's, Sears, J.C. Penney, Express, Home Depot, Bed, Bath and Beyond and Loews. There is also a Home Depot in Monticello. And there's always Walmart . . .
About schools, some people say that the Tri-Valley Schools in Sullivan County are the best. I've heard that there is gang activity in Monticello, and Liberty is not all that great. I don't know about the schools in the western part of the county. Note: I don't have school-aged children so what I'm saying is really second-hand information.
What Sullivan County does have to offer is outdoor activities (hiking, hunting, fishing, birding, etc.), a slow-paced way of life, and lower housing costs. The environment is pristine in some parts, but there is the threat of hydralic fracturing, or fracking, especially in the western part of the county near the Delaware River, although many environmental groups are fighting that. Just make sure that you don't move to a community where this is likely to take place.
Thanks for that info, Galee. The fracking issue is something I hadn't thought of so that is good to keep in mind. We were leaning more towards the towns other than Liberty so I'm not suprised there.
Of the places that you named, I would recommend Napanoch. It is very small and quiet. Stores nearby in Ellenville. Schools are an issue though - the Ellenville District serves this area and it has extremely high drop out rates if I remember correctly. Lots of hiking / biking in beautiful Cragsmoor, NY.

Hello lsadlonjo,
The region and the "villages" you have mentioned are in a VERY RURAL - LOW POPULATION - LOW INCOME AREA which I'm sure you already know. Two of those hamlets ("villages"), Glen Spey and Napanoch are especially small population places so it is difficult to find much information about them; but I've done my best to get you the information anyway.
Each village/hamlet you inquired about is listed separately below. Click on the Link Lines to read about each village.

Have you considered Wurtsboro? (Town of Mamakating, Sullivan County). I believe it is Monticello School District, but far enough away from crime areas of Monticello and Liberty. The entire area is very dependent on the area prisons, rehabilitation centers and refurbished hotels for employment. Some of the old borscht-belt hotels are now refurbished into resorts. Bethel Arts Center hosts a variety of top-name entertainment. The area is indeed beautiful, but there is a fair share of poverty and close-mindedness with some locals. I have lived all over the country, but I now work in this area and live nearby. The winters are harsh and long, and we did have alot of rain this entire year, so we felt cheated out of our long-awaited spring and summer. With this recent snowstorm dumping almost a foot of snow in some places, people aren't very friendly these days.
The area is full of locals and transplants. Along with the controversial fracking issue (which I am opposed), there is also alot of tension between artists and locals. Seems locals equate artists with higher taxes to support their visions, and I must say as a closet artist......I agree! Taxes DO go up proportionately.
I would recommend Wurtsboro because it is very close to Rt. 17, the people take great pride in their village and it is full of quaint shops and old historic homes. Check it out and good luck to you!
Another town you might like is Livingston Manor. It has a nice restaurant and some cute shops. There are quite a few NYC transplants there. It's a bit further north, but it's right off Route 17 do it has easy access. Just be sure not to buy in a low-land area. There has been some flooding in those areas.
Hey all, anybody have info about the Black Forest Colony? How is the community vibe? How remote for the rest of Glen Spey for local amenities ?
