By train, you can go as far as Albany north in under 2 hours. I love the train ride up alongside the Hudson. Lots of little towns in that area. We live about 1 hour west of Albany in Oneonta -- small college town so has the library, bookstore, coffee shops, etc. We love it!

You forgot to mention rowdy college kids and more booze than you can shake a stick at. I do love that city for partying but maybe not the best place to live.
