We will be relocating next summer -- there is a possibility it will be to Newburgh NY. From what I've read about the area, we may wish to live in a surrounding town and commute to Newburgh for work. What towns would be best as far as safety, cost of living, and good schools? Within 15 or 20 minutes is preferable but would go up to 30-40 if really needed.
Perhaps areas/school districts like Cornwall, Monroe-Woodbury, Washingtonville and Valley Central may be worth a look. Others like Wallkill, Marlboro and Highland Falls are within or are close to the max commute.
Before seriously considering a town, make sure you research what the SCHOOL TAXES are.
I don't know from what place you are relocating, but school taxes for a homeowner in the Hudson Valley could blow your mind if you're not prepared, and even more so in certain school districts.
Also, I've seen some school districts suggested here that aren't as good as you might be led to believe. Just because a town is portrayed as being quaint doesn't mean its school system is near adequate.
And beware of Marlboro. Taxes skyrocketed with the power plant debacle.

Which school districts would you say aren't as good as some may think and why? For instance, Highland Falls may come to mind due to the military presence and in turn may mean quite a bit of turnover in terms of students.

I know about that, but that only tells about test scores in relation to the rest of the state when they post rankings for schools. There may be other factors that may need to be considered, like the one possibility with Highland Falls Schools.
Schools aside, why would someone want to live in Highland Falls? To live there is to live in the dark crevice of a mountain, isolated from just about everything. No, thank you.

I'm not saying they have to. I just said that it is an area within the commute limit.
I have to say, that town is the most depressing place in which I've spent time in all of Orange County. It's a shame, because the military academy is there, but it's obvious from just visiting the main street on multiple occasions that West Point contributes absolutely nothing to it.
And yeah, the commute time might be less from other places, but then again you have to add on all the time it takes to get to a store and civilization. Who the heck wants to get home and traverse 9W in icy/foggy/snowy conditions, and spend an hour in just travel time to get food, buy a pair of socks, or see a doctor?
Highland Falls is near, yet bizzarly far away.
