My kid (19) is planning on attending Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY, coming from sunny Florida.
Seems from the research I made it is a very small town, in upstate NY. Information is conflicting about the lifestyle, crime, cost of living, etc.

What is the good, bad, and ugly?
Interested to know how safe it is to live there. Cost of living (housing, food, gas, groceries, etc.)? Healthcare? What to do around, mainly on weekends?

Any feedback also from this college is appreciated.

Thank you!!!

Well, there the city of Newburgh and the town of Newburgh. The city has had a rep for being the highest crime city in the state in the past, but has actually gotten its crime rate down quite a bit in recent years and I wouldn't be surprised if it gets more "interest" in the future. The town is more suburban in nature and largely middle class.

The area of the city around the campus looks generally solid, but hopefully someone can chime in with more specific information.

It is a very diverse city of about 30,000 right on the Hudson River and about 70 miles or so north of NYC.

A 9mm might help, but I would consider packing something with a little more stopping power.

The census tract the campus is in, which has an economic/racial mix likely due to off campus college students, but perhaps faculty/staff of the college: https://censusreporter.org/profiles/...t-1-orange-ny/

It is close to Balmville(cdp) in the town of Newburgh and a more uniformly middle class area of the city to the west/SW: https://censusreporter.org/profiles/...102-orange-ny/

It is also near the bridge to Beacon, an artsy, gentrifying and pretty diverse small city across the Hudson River. https://censusreporter.org/profiles/...100-beacon-ny/

Overall cost of living appears to be a little over the national average(about 122 out of 100 according to one source).

As for healthcare, this is the hospital in the city and is only blocks away from the campus: https://www.montefioreslc.org/

There's this medical center west of the city in the town of Newburgh as well: https://www.crystalrunhealthcare.com/locations/newburgh

Here is an article from a couple of weeks ago about things to do in the city in the Hudson Valley Magazine: https://hvmag.com/things-to-do/newbu...hour-day-trip/

Some more information: https://www.reddit.com/r/hudsonvalle...ideas_on_what/

Again, hopefully someone can offer more specific information.

Is this information for the student themselves or are you joining them to live there as well? By the way this happens a lot where the parent and child move because a change in the child’s education or the place the parent works.

Regardless, I am from Westchester so here is my honest opinion.

It’s funny you call it upstate, I have relatives from Long Island who consider Westchester upstate, and when I drive to Poughkeepsie locals laugh at me because I consider it upstate. People from Buffalo know that Buffalo is upstate, for your information. You can think upstate is whatever you want.

Mt. St. Mary’s is a good school whose reputation is getting more public acknowledgment due to their athletics program. If your child wants people to remember him, this is the place for them. It’s a kind of school where you won’t be a number, if you know what I mean. So making friends will absolutely not be a problem.

I like Newburgh because it’s on the Hudson River, has a lot of local shopping plazas, a mall across the river (Poughkeepsie), and a good spirited town with events and gatherings for people to meet. I think there is also a casino there as well.

I also like Newburgh because it has farms. You could be downtown and ten minutes later be on a farm.

Also, getting to NYC can be accomplished by the Poughkeepsie Metro North Station.

Back to the college, everything is confined to what is like a mile radius of facilities. https://www.msmc.edu/visit/campus-map-directions/

What I mean is, if you look at the map, all the places a student will be traveling to will be walkable. I’m sure campus security is in place as well, and you might even be given a parking spot if you have a car, not sure on their policy.

In the winter, you will have to deal with snow and icy roads. If the campus has a deal with the local government, they might be responsible for plowing and shoveling the sidewalks. Coming from where you are from, you will need a winter jacket, boots, and winter gloves.

I hope this helps. I feel you should move forward with confidence with the decision to attend MSM.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send me a message.
