From the article: "Sana Wakefield of Binghamton is helping to feed the hungry, help the homeless and encourage anyone in need that they can make it through hard times just like she did.
“Even if you are going through something painful, there’s something better on the other side, â€she said. “It’s also about turning pain into strength.â€
Wakefield is one of the co-founders of a new nonprofit, GloryShines Foundation, along with her sister, Samira Wakefield; and N’Daisha Williams. Wakefield serves as the foundation’s chief executive officer while her sister serves as chief operating officer and Williams serves as chief financial officer. The foundation began in March and is a team project which is getting plenty of support from volunteers in the community.
“I say it’s our nonprofit,†Wakefield said.
Wakefield is no stranger to hard times. A Christian who attends City Church in downtown Binghamton, she prayed about her struggles and decided she wanted to do something to give back to others who were going through tough times, she said.
“It’s just something that’s a part of me,†she said.
One of the foundation’s programs is feeding the hungry with the help of Pancho’s Caribbean Kitchen in Binghamton, Wakefield said. People in need of food are referred to the foundation by agencies such as Catholic Charities of Broome County and callers to 211, an information and referral service for people in need.
“If they need a hot meal, we find a way to get them a hot meal,†she said.
Next month, the foundation will serve hot meals to homeless families temporarily housed in local motels by the Broome County Department of Social Services, Wakefield said.
“We will be feeding 250 to 300 families during the month of October,†she said.
Another project the foundation is involved in is a new blessing box located at 8 Munsell St. on the city’s North Side, Wakefield said. People in need can take non-perishable food from the box along with other items such as laundry detergent, dish soup and toothbrushes.
Earlier this year, GloryShines attended a health fair sponsored by Catholic Charities of Broome County and gave away light bottles with inspirational sayings on them, Wakefield said.
“I matter,†one bottle read.
“I never give up,†another bottle read.
“I shine bright,†yet another bottle read.
GloryShines will help people internationally as well as locally, Wakefield said. One of their projects is collecting canned goods, clothing, toys and books for a Red Cross Convalescent Home located in D’Urban Blackland Georgetown, Guyana in South America. Donations are being collected through the month of November. In December, some members of the GloryShines Foundation will travel to Guyana and deliver the donations in person.
