The most backwards, under educated, ill managed, frustrating, depressing place i've ever lived. i've been to all kinds of places all over the country, living in over a dozen towns for over a year. I have spent tremendous amounts of time living and cunducting business in Erie Co, Monroe Co, Broome Co, Westchester Co, Bronx, Long Island..... Cairo, in Greene County has been a real disappointment. The town and county have one thing in comon - politicians and law enforcement that steer their decisions based on friends and what they all get out of it. their is no forward-looking in their decision making. if you are new to the area do not try and start a business or develop property. the people here do not like new citizens. they are jealous of anyone new and go out of their way to create problems for anyone with any ambition or goals. the bottom line is this county is stuck in a time warp and there is no one qualified enough to get the area out of the twilight zone. everyone has tunnelvision and are very small minded. hard to believe the financial capitol of the world is a quick 120 miles away and the people here behave like they are living in the 1920's..... steer clear

hehe...we chased another one out of here!

If we wanted city atmosphere and development...we'd move south. We like it here because there is none of that going on.

buh-bye.

Does the Hotel Walter still exist? About a million years ago I worked there as a bartender. Just curious if it is still around. Thanks!

It was in Cairo. To the best of my recollection on Main Street. The last time I laid eyes on it was probably the mid 1970s.

Ok...you've peaked my curiosity now and I feel a mission to discover this hotel and what may have become of it (I moved to the area in 1998, from Columbia County (Valatie)). So far, I've been able to tell there were 2 Hotel Walters...(same family)...one back in late 1800's. I assume that you're talking about the New Walters Hotel (see pic below.) If so, could you remember which side of the street it was on if one was driving up towards Main Street from Route 32? Do you remember anything else around it (Cairo Diner, church , etc?)

The image in the postcard would appear to be the Hotel Walters that I knew. But it was the early 1970s so a lot of that time period is a bit "foggy"

Thanks for making the effort to find out more information. Unfortunately, I don't recall much else about it. I do remember that the unofficial (or was it official?) mayor of Cairo at the time was named "Poodle".

Ok...I've been able to determine that the hotel was torn down and that the Cairo Town Hall & Public Library now sits on the site of the hotel. Like I said, I moved to Cairo in 1998, and the town hall/library was there then, but it is a fairly new building...but I do not have the exact date it was built. I'll try to find that out and report back to you.

Some other local new: The Cairo Diner (original building) was in business up until a few years ago...2002 or so, and was then torn down. Catskill Game Farm is out of business...after 72 years in business...closed at then end of the 2006 season.
