I'm planning to relocate to the Wappingers/Poughkeepsie area in the near future, but have heard that parts of Poughkeepsie are not altogether "safe." I was at a section of Poughkeepsie that seemed rather scary for annual fireworks display. But this weekend I visited the area near Vassar College and that was lovely. Seems as though neighborhoods can be quite different depending upon what part of Poughkeepsie you are in.

Is the Main Street/West Maple Street area of Poughkeepsie ok?

Suggestions for good areas to look at for housing? I'm looking for a home or condo that is in a quiet part of town, but near everything (hopefully even close proximity to a facility that has a pool where I can get a membership).

Thanks!

The part Of Poughkeepsie You Referenced Is Actually Quite Nice! The Area Near Vassar College. Also You Have Hooker Ave Near Their Which Is Ok, Raymond Avenue...And The Section Right Behind The Acropolis Diner Is Fine. If You Go Down Just A Mile Or 2 To Red Oaks Mill/Spackenkill That Is The Best Around There, And Just Mins From IBM Poughkeepsie & Rt. 9.

All posters should be careful not to confuse the City of Poughkeepsie which is much smaller than the Town of Poughkeepsie that surrounds it on three sides.

The city has a a couple of nice areas --but the schools are poor. Lots of beautiful Victorian homes even in the undesirable parts of the city

South of Main is lovely, particularly in the areas surrounding Vassar. There are quiet neighborhoods filled with colonials, dutch colonials, cape codes and bungalows. It's a really nice area with a really bad reputation. Kind of a shame.
