Yes! the capital region. When I was growing up it was called the capital district.

You make a good point too, not only is there upstate, northern, western, etc, there are regions. Mohawk Valley region. Hudson Valley Region. Susquehanna Valley Region. The Adirondack Park. The Catskill Park. But...as was said, if you live in NYC, it's all upstate, heehee

Many people in other parts of the country don't even realize that much of NY is mountains, rivers and lakes. They hear NY and think NYC. I had a friend when I lived in Texas who could not grasp the concept of anything but NYC, even after I showed her a map so she could see how much of NY isn't NYC, she could not picture me growing up in a tiny farming community in Saratoga County.

I always hoped she would visit me once I moved back, but she didn't stay in touch.

It's interesting that both Rochester and Buffalo say they are in Western NY, but never acknowledge the other. Well, Rochester seems to more than Buffalo, but why can't we work closer together. And Syracuse too. We'd have much more clout against the 15 million NYC area.
