I've noticed that a lot of men – and a few women – have a habit of looking over at the car next to them when they pull up to a red light. Most guys say "it's just a habit," but I sometimes suspect that it's because they (1) want to see if the other driver is a woman, and (2) want to see if the woman is attractive.
As for women doing it, I suspect that they, too, are looking to see if the driver next to them is of the opposite sex and attractive. Do you agree or do you think it's something else ?
I only do it if they just did something completely stupid, like cut someone off, change lanes without signalling, or they're driving excessively slowly. I get ticked off at how idiotic they are and just want to see what they LOOK LIKE or if they're on the phone. If they look back at me, I can make a face expressing shock and "disapproval" about their idiotic actions.
Also if I'm at a light and the car next to me is blaring its music so loudly that my car is vibrating and I can feel their bass at the base of my skull, I look over to see if they LOOK as annoying as they are. Usually they do.
So to me (a female) it has nothing to do with looking for an attractive person. It has to do with my having formed a very negative opinion of the person, and I just want to see what that person looks like.
I have not driven in years, But used to look just out of curiosity and it also provided a break from staring straight ahead while actually driving. Sometimes kids would make faces at me so I got a laugh out of it which helped de-stress because as many know driving in NY is not fun.
I often look at the person next to me at a red light. I will say that we have wwaaayyy less red lights than NY does (we don't have a single one in town...I have to travel 24 miles to a town big enough to have red lights ). Most of the time I look over because I probably know the person driving and not acknowledging them and waving would be considered rude. Peering into the next car doesn't have anything to do with checking out the opposite sex for me. Mostly I do it out of simple curiosity.
Its just good to be aware of your surroundings and know who is pulling up next to you. If its an attractive woman thats only a plus. But if its gangbangers I wanna know they're not up to something stupid.

I learned many years ago while living in S. California to not look at the people in the car next to you. All you need to do is look at the wrong person and you could have problems. I look straight ahead.
