generally, the senior partners and executive types get first pass at the food available.
second wave is the white collar types
third wave is the blue collar maintenance/engineer/hands-on types
if there's any food left over, (typically this is the dry bagels and cookies and cake stuff), the secretary types will be flagging down randoms in the hall "would you like some CAKE???" because nothing can be saved and it's just going in the trash.
Over the years, I haven't worked in places with generously, free flowing food, so the rare times a senior exec's meeting was catered, I've always seen the same pecking order as above & what was given to the 2nd tier down were only the scant leftovers from the meeting... basically, the odd egg salad/pastrami sandwiches no one wanted, a bit of dried out, cut-up veggies and/or watery, dodgy looking fruit salad. No matter where I am in the pecking order, I'm a bit peeved that the rest of the company is relegated to mainly empty trays of what the execs would have tossed, so I've never partaken... I also don't know how long it's been sitting out at room temp, so I'd rather bypass it all anyway. I've never seen the trays of cake or sweets others mentioned... maybe simply as they don't last long at the meeting.
Also, having worked with mainly 20-something lads, I've almost been stampeded a few times by them storming the kitchen & grabbing food as if the world were ending today. None has ever given a care to the sharing principle... it's grab all you can or don't get any. I've noticed that the behavior of all, from top down, has always been an indication of how employees were treated as a whole... I avoid the hyena mentality, someone upstream mentioned, whenever possible.
I always have my own food when working... lunches are often shorter than 1-hr & I'd rather eat in peace & quiet, outdoors in the sunshine, if possible... a bit of recharge & solace before returning to the patriarchy.
In the future, were I to be at a catered affair, I wouldn't plan on eating a whole meal at the buffet table... I'd sample a bit & let others have a chance, out of common courtesy.
We are in a Regus office and Regus had pizza from Pizza Hut delivered. When I went in there, I noticed people were just grabbing a piece or two, likely out of trying to have enough for everyone, but there was more than an ample amount.
Do you take less than you'd normally eat if food is catered to try and be nice?
Yes, but a piece or two is a good portion anyway....
No. I take what I'm interested in eating which is normally a small amount of fruit, salad or a sandwich. I leave the pizza, muffins, bagels, cookies and sodas for everyone else.
It's just rude to pile your plate up high before everyone has at least had a piece or two. If after the first pass there's plenty more, go up and take a reasonable second helping to leave some for others who want seconds. For crying out loud who wants to look like some kind of starving heathen in front of their boss and co-workers. People wonder why they don't get promoted to client-facing positions, maybe it's because they have no manners at all.
I'm sure they meant, thanks for leaving us the GOOD FOOD, not how MUCH you took.
I agree, it is good food for people who can enjoy it. I love scones, muffins and danishes but I don't have the calories in my budget to eat them (unless I want to do some serious makeup workouts). Plus, I've got to stay away from sugary foods (even limiting fruit) for medical reasons, otherwise I'll barely be able to remember my name a few hours later. I do actually envy folks who can dig into pastries.
