We have to attend, but the husbands and wives don't know what to say or how to act in this insane situation.

I read the post before I saw who posted it. Yet somehow, I knew.

As with everything else in life, treat others as you would want to be treated. It doesn't matter who started it (which is really a 5-year old's defense).

Rubbish. You don't HAVE to do anything. If you and your wife absolutely abhor that behavior then just don't go. What I don't understand is if this is how her family has been, why do those who married into the family act all surprised?

I can see a few being surprised by this kind of family. Those few are probably naive, thinking love cures all. But all the husbands and wives? Nah, people generally gravitate to those who are like them/grew up in similar environment. The sane/normal ones would've run, screaming for their lives before even touching this fustercluck.

One of the several preceding threads of which this is a repeat:

My wife's parents started screaming at her in my presence, what should I do?

That's what I mean--the people who married into the family like the husbands and wives--they've seen this behavior since the moment they met their spouses now suddenly they're

I agree--any normal/sane person would run the other way if they saw this behavior, which leads me to believe that the OP might fit right in.

You could tape it & send it to the Jerry Springer show--maybe all of you would have your 15 minutes of fame. Lol.

The indefatigable OP could also approach Dr Phil and have a family intervention on Prime-Time TV. The only problem I can envisage is that Dr Phil may not have large enough affiliated treatment facilities to accommodate the sheer number of dysfunctional adults on both sides of the family. If one believes the OP's innumerable stories, not only is the number huge but the age range most varied. Heck, the OP even got confused about the gender of one sibling's child who in the space of just one post morphed from being a niece to a nephew ...

You will be so busy bugging your new, antisocial, brother-in-law, you'll hardly notice the fighting. The brother-in-law is the smartest one in the mix. You can learn a lot from a quiet man.

I think you inlaws should up the ante by bringing knives and guns.
