I like them -- so what if they only hit the high spots? Perhaps people think that no one wants downers in their Christmas cards: "Merry Christmas! My dog died and I'm in rehab! But don't worry, I'm getting married for the fourth time in February!" Some are better written than others, true. I love one we get from a friend who writes on one side of the letter in English and the other side in Icelandic. :-)
I don't mind the letters. Everyone is so wrapped up these days, that few people have time to keep in touch throughout the year. This is especially true of people who live elsewhere.
I do prefer more direct communication though, but haven't had time to initiate. I prefer that Christmas cards just express good tidings for the holiday season, with all the non-holiday news reserved for another time.
The newsletters are nice. That said, I don't send out Christmas cards nor do I expect to receive any. If I get them. Cool. If someone cuts me off the list because they don't get any in return. Cool. It's just not my thing.
The Christmas newsletters are much like posts here on CityData: if you don't like what's written there then DON'T READ THEM. What: do you think there's going to be a quiz?
World stress would go down by half if people would just learn to not let other people control them--BY "FORCING" THEM TO READ THEIR CHRISTMAS NEWSLETTERS!!" The b@stards!
So you think I should call them up and say, "I don't like your Christmas newsletters, so stop sending them?"
Uhhhh, no thanks.
It's OK for husbands and wives to discuss casual acquaintances and even laugh about them between themselves. I don't feel the sllghtest bit of guilt.
None of my actual close friends send any of those goobery things out. For that I am grateful.
Remember your "What does your user name mean?" thread, Kathryn, particularly the part where you said this?

Your response to LoriBee is perfectly emblematic of what could make someone come to that conclusion.
I love getting the newsletters and if people want to put a positive spin on things, all the better. Unfortunately, with the onset of social media, I think we only get one now.
