When my nephew died, there were close to 2,000 people at the wake. They had buses coming in from New Jersey and people flying in from Chicago and up and down the East Coast. It was almost overwhelming standing on the receiving line. On one hand, it was beautiful that he touched so many lives. But on the other, that made his untimely death at 33 that much more of a tragedy.
Funeral is for the living. I'd want as many people there as felt the desire to attend a funeral for me. I won't make any rules or last requests about what other people do to remember or honor my death... or whatever they feel like doing. That's for them.
At the end of the day, I would want a smaller, more private gathering because I would then know that only those who care about me would be there. I don't want Joe-Schmo who is only there because he feels like he has to. If your at my funeral, it's because you want to be there and a private gathering ensures that.
There was a high profile murder case here in Indiana over the last week where a college girl was murdered. I think the news was predicting hundreds, if not well over a thousand, people at the funeral, if it hasn't already occurred. This is a huge outpouring of support for the family and the deceased.
On the flip side of that, I've been to a couple of funerals where it seemed like very few were there except the closest friends and family. It seemed sad to me.
How many people would you want at your funeral? An intimate, private gathering or a larger, more public ceremony? Why?
around 100 people, I want it to be my family and close friends.
I do hope they would cremate me...whoever they are...
