I'm 52. Grew up with the hallmark of constant extended family get-togethers... 50-100+ people each time... Mother's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving & X-mas.
As a little kid, I found it fascinating, yet confusing. During the get-togethers, you would think these people all loved, enjoyed and adored each other.... yet.... during the time spans between these events, clearly they had very little love for many?
The backstabbing, belittling, gossipy comments absolutely confused me. This is probably why I'm an Introverted homebody.

You make a good point. It's confusing as a kid when you get yelled at for being bashful because your great aunt wants to give you a big sloppy kiss on the cheek, but same great aunt's character is thoroughly bashed (behind her back) at all other times she's mentioned.
"You know your great aunt Cheryl was a real wildcat when she was young. She drove her poor mother to an early grave. The family always had to support her and clean up her messes. Now your grandmother cleans her house once a week, still taking care of her - and what does she give in return? Nothing. She's a selfish human being" followed by
"You go give your great aunt Cheryl a kiss this instant! She's your great aunt and you need to respect her, young lady!!"
