I know of two siblings that are very different when it comes to their attitudes towards life and the success they have been able to achieve, despite having virtually the exact same upbringing.

They are just two years apart and the older one has a master's degree and is very highly motivated. The younger one barely finished high school and pretty much lives in the projects.

How common do you think this type of situation is? And is there any real explanation for it? Especially when they virtually had the same upbringing...

Children from the same parents are not clones, even identical twins can have differing personalities. Me & my siblings all have very different outlooks & attitudes. I think that is normal

you can say that about the exact same person, much less two different people

heard how someone can do well in high school, but poorly in college? or the other way around?

My sister and I were totally different from looks to personality to life style.

Probably quite common.

My children are very different from each other. My daughter is an optimistic person, and her brother is a glass half empty sort of person. She looks like my side of the family, and her brother looks like his dad. So in our case their personalities match the parent they look like.

Son number two, with a different father, looks purely like my side of the family, and he has the easy going personality of my side too. As I mentioned elsewhere, this son just had our first “ours” grandchild, and gramps and I can’t wait to see what her personality is like.

To me, it seems more common for siblings to be completely different than for them to be the same.

Birth order, family dynamics, and significant events in the family at the time the children were growing up have a significant effect on how different siblings approach life. For instance, the oldest child is often the most ambitious and most responsible of the siblings because they have to look after the younger ones. The youngest child is usually babied the most and therefore can grow up with less sense of responsibility than the older siblings. Or, the older siblings may have gone through some key upsetting events that occurred before the youngest was even born. Or the youngest may be a positive, upbeat person because they were protected from the hardcore difficult stuff that went on in the family.

Overall though I do find it interesting that such big differences between siblings are possible in families.

Totally agree. Also, I noticed that first borns get pushed to grow up faster, because we parents are eager to see them conquer the next stage of development, and last born get slowed down to keep babyish as long as possible.
