It was my adult son who was bitten. It happened before I found this forum or I would have posed the question at the time to get some feedback. Still, I was curious now what the responses would be.
What did the neighbor do? Did they pay your sons medical bills? Apologize? Offer something more?
Grudgingly paid medical bills and not a penny more. Then stopped talking to us.
Didn't they pay your son for watching the dog while they were on vacation? One thing has nothing to do with the other, but their behavior is even more egregious if he was doing it for free.
My son was bitten by a dog while working at his after school job at a dog day care. It was only a puncture wound, but it became infected and cost far more than $50 to treat. His "boss" had no insurance. We weren't neighbors, but another of my sons was dating her daughter at the time, and we let it go. But we didn't let our son return to work for her.
When I was a kid, I was walking down the street and a neighbor's dog charged out from behind a bush and bit my leg. I wasn't injured, but my mom insisted I go to the doctor to get a tetanus shot because the skin was broken.
My mom told the doctor what happened. The next day, someone (animal control?) went to the neighbor's house and took the dog. I don't know any additional details. Presumably the dog was killed. The neighbor didn't pay the doctor bill and never communicated with us again.

Winter Sucks, you continue to duck pertinent questions that would shed light on this situation.
1. Did you have any medical bills that were ACTUALLY medical bills - that is, services provided by professional medial providers. Vs. bandaids and neosporin from the local walgreens.
2. If your son actually had medical care, what happened when he reported the dog that bit him? Do you sense once the neighbor was involved with the city animal code, they stopped responding to you?

I think it is true that posters often critique the OP somewhat sharply, but that may be due to the fact that a lot of unplanned backfilling goes on in people's minds, to 'flesh out' one-sided stories, especially briefly worded ones. And OP's are, by necessity, one-sided.
But I feel your point, and it isn't that far off the mark...
This entire conversation could have been simplified had you simply given all the facts in your original post.
The neighbor should have paid all medical bills, provided you with proof that the dog's shots are current, and then tried to do something to ensure that it doesn't bite anyone else. All of this accompanied, of course, by profuse apologies. And yeah, doing something nice for your son by way of further apology wouldn't have been out of order, either.
