I work for a large global engineering firm ... female engineers in our company are definitely in the minority, and I guarantee you that none of them got into the field because they like hanging out with guys. If anything, they wanted to show the world that they could do just as well in a male-dominated field as they could.

I go to school for engineering, and the reasoning is, because 80% of the profession is male, then any girl who attempts engineering must love hanging out with the guys, doing guys stuff, and not care about their appearance.

Much to my surprise, most girls in my engineering classes are just as feminine as girls majoring in Psychology or English or some other female-majority, humanities majors.

Don't get me wrong, the girls in engineering seem geeky, alright. Geeky, but far from being tomboys. Still very fashionable, talkative, hang out with their girl-friends, etc. Quite disappointing!

Gawd almighty, where in the freakin world did you come up with this notion? Never once during my 20 year career in nuclear engineering did I ever consider climbing a tree.

Wowwwwww. There are no words.

Or perhaps they attempt engineering because they're interested in the field and it has absolutely nothing to do with the guys?
I'm interested in the field, that's why I picked it. Also, to make a good living. The girls were an afterthought.

Why on Earth would you think a tomboy would look butch? Tomboys are just girls who like to be outside and do things like fishing, camping, and being outside. They can still care about how they look and most do. Check out the female race car drivers, rodeo participants, etc. They are very attractive women usually. Your ideas are skewed to say the least. I have always loved skiing, snow boarding, fishing, running, cycling, boating, and just being outdoors. However, I sure wouldn't consider myself butch.

tomboy is an old-fashioned term. It implies that there are boy things, and girl things, and a divide, and strict gender roles. This is not true. It sends the wrong message. And many young people like a combination of many things, not following labels or gender-restricted ideas.

This short essay explains it.

Dunno. I simply know that I enjoyed that terminology growing up...it empowered me to 'do'activities and rarely blink an eye .

I don't know where the OP is residing but where I am I'd just like to see an occasional dress or skirt once in awhile.
