what would you most enjoy seeing in your guest room when you arrive?

Something pleasant, that would make you smile?

A nice batch of toiletries... in case they forgot something, or nice travel sizes to take with. Nice basket of shampoo, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, conditioner, lotion, chap stick, and new white washcloths. Nice new towels to use.

How would a guest know if towels were new or not? Extra shampoo and conditioner isn't a bad idea, in case they forgot theirs. I was thinking more along the lines of a vase of fresh flowers. But I've never thought about it before. I feel that the generosity of providing people a free place to stay in a high-demand tourist area is enough of a gift. It never occurred to me, to provide anything more. My guests are usually very happy to have a place to stay. I don't expect anything fancy or special, when I'm a guest in someone's home.

Like Diana said. But I'm all about fresh flowers & chocolate. & if you live where it's cold a nice fluffy down comforter or an extra fleece throw is a nice touch.

My guest would not expect something special...
but I want to give her a pleasant surprise. Little things mean a lot to some of us.

I think you can tell when towels are brand new.

I couch surfed a bit in younger years. The things that always were most appreciated were some kind of access to water in the middle of the night - a pitcher of water with a couple of clean glasses on a tray, or a bottle of water. Easy access to electrical outlets for charging phones. Some manner of temperature control (an extra blanket in case it got cold, a fan of some sort in case it got too hot). Keeping pets that tend to be middle-of-the-night nuisances out of the space where guests are bedding down.

One thing that was well-meant but definitely not appreciated: having my guest pillow case sprayed with Febreze or some kind of scent. Who wants to be resting their mouth and nostrils against perfume?

I wouldn't have cared about new towels. I stayed in a place once that provided me and several other people with a single bath towel to share, and it smelled horribly of mildew before any of us even used it. I still shudder about that one.
