I was wondering what your thoughts are to kissing family members on the lips. I have grown children and when I say my good byes, I hug and kiss them on the cheek. Never do I kiss them on the lips. My opinion is that lips are reserved for kisses of romance.
But I have seen others kiss children and grandchildren on the lips (closed mouth of course). I think kissing on the lips isn’t appropriate, but this is just my opinion. I would be interested in reading your thoughts on this.
We didn't kiss on the lips in my family, and I don't want to kiss anyone but my SO on the lips.
Seems like a good moment for a public service announcement:
Many type 1 herpes virus infections occur during childhood when an infant or child is kissed by a relative or friend who has active type 1, or oral herpes (cold sores). This is common—about 50% to 80% of adults in the United States have type 1 herpes. The virus is also present in the saliva of people with oral herpes.
It's the norm for my mom, and all her side of the family....personally I prefer the cheek...mostly for the exact reasons that riotsquirrels printed.....I've always thought it a good way to spread flu and cold germs as well.
Maybe not customary where you are from, but certainly the norm in many places.
In looking at the "kissiest" places I know of, Italy, France, and Argentina ... they use the cheeks. I don't know of any cultures where the "lips" is standard, but "you learn something knew every day," so I'd like to see that list.
I grew up kissing on the lips and cheeks with relatives close and distant. It doesn't bother me. Obviously I only tongue wrestle with my husband.
