Seems the recent recession has been very hard on Rocky Mount.

Forbes names Rocky Mount one of most impoverished U.S. cities :: WRAL.com

Sounds like Fords Colony and the rest of Rocky Mount are the extremes of wealth.

I drove through Rocky Mount a few months ago. The place is very, very run down. There's no way all of that just happened with this economic downturn. The boarded up buildings certainly didn't have new plywood on them.

I unfortunately moved here from Phoenix to be closer to family and this town was like this when I moved here for 3 months in 1993. Don't know why I thought it had changed and came back- it is a very sad depressing place. It's like a forgotten city and everyone living here are in a dazed and oblivious to the rest of the world. As soon as my lease it up I'm outta here. Wilson looks more appealing as well as Greenville.

Bad city. Why? Look at the demographics.

Greenville is MUCH more desirable, my dad works for a large company in Rocky Mount, but he commutes from Greenville, there is no where to even live there!

I don't know what he meant, but here is Rocky Mount's C-D page.

Actually was thinking about this last night, although nearby places (Greenville, Winterville, Wilson) may be more desirable, to say Rocky Mount is in the top 10 is a GIANT stretch, maybe the top 500, but definitely not the top 10. I have been to Rocky Mount SEVERAL times, the mall is full of shoppers, and EVERY restaurant is packed, and going out during the day, I never felt scared at all (coming from a young 100lb white girl who was raised in an ultra-suburban part of NJ). I think the results of this are severely scewed, and if Rocky Mount is that "impoverished" compared to all the rest of the U.S., the U.S. is in mighty good shape.
