Hi everyone! I'm hoping to take a last minute road trip from Oct 6-9. I know it's a short time, so I want to make the most of it. My main reason is that I want to cross off all 50 states, and I have never been to either of the Carolinas. I don't want to just step foot in each state to say I did it...I'd rather see things and take fun pictures (my hobby)...HOWEVER, I am looking to spend the lowest amount of money I can.

I live in California and will probably fly into Atlanta since it's cheapest. From there I can ride the Megabus to Charlotte for less than $20. I will most likely rent a car there, but still looking at other options...maybe Amtraking it? Has anyone done this, and which cities should I plan on going through if I want to make a loop from Atlanta and back? (going through both N and S Carolina?) Thanks for your help!

Once you get to Charlotte, it's just a short drive to the South Carolina suburbs. It's maybe 12 miles to Tega Key from the Charlotte airport. IMHO, Amtrak wouldn't be cost effective or timely. Amtrak goes north and south through the middle of the state.

I think you have a weird hobby, but hope you enjoy the trip.

Thanks! I actually was able to get a good deal on a flight to Charlotte, so I think I'll just rent a car from there.

I thought photography was a pretty common hobby. Weird or not, taking photos in new places is one of my favorite things to do.

Sorry, the only thing I found unusual (weird) was trying to set foot in all 50 states. I enjoy photography also, especially new and different places.

The mountains should have some fall color. Someone posted this link in another active thread: Asheville NC Fall Foliage Color Leaf Report 2012

These folks put out a free magazine. My town's fall festival was featured on the cover so copies were all over town. I found the website for you. Festival News » Home

You're welcome. Everything in the magazine is not on the website, but at least it might help.

This is a common "bucket list" (I am far from it, myself, and I don't count changing planes at an airport as "visiting"). I even knew someone who was trying to have sex in all 50 states!

To answer the OP, yes, the Charlotte vicinity will give you a good taste of NC--you aren't far from the mountains--and is right across the border from some stuff in SC, although SC's "jewels" are more considered places like Charleston, on the other end.
