Palo Alto, Calif.-based Tesla Motors, an electric car manufacturer, will open a high-speed charging station this week along Interstate 85 in Burlington. The company plans to open 50 charging stations nationwide by the end of the year.
The "high-speed" charger still takes a half hour to fill 'er up, so long trips are not really practical. A fully electric car is not a good option for your only vehicle at this time.

People need to wrap their heads around the concept that you don't wait around as if your pumping fuel, you can leave your car unattended while it charges. It's the perfect time to go have lunch/dinner and use the restroom.

Er, the Tesla will get 200-300 miles on a charge. With the chargers they are planning, you can stop every 4-5 hours for a charge, grab a bite to eat, take a break and be on your way. Seems rational to me.
Will I still get 300 miles if I run the air-conditioner? Heater? Headlights? Window defroster? Radio? Windshield wipers? Will I still get 300 miles per charge after the battery is five years old? Must I make a conscious decision on what options I can run and still reach my destination? I do sometimes drive more than 300 miles in a day.

Then it's probably not a good option. For YOU.
