It's not impossible for voters to break through gerrymandered districts,.....
Politicians will be politicians no matter what party they are in. However...
Gerrymandering is only made possible by the voter. As long as voters define everything by the party instead of the individual, then they can expect to be gerrymandered. That is the way it is. People have it in their power to fix it simply by voting for the individual instead of by the party.
For close to 100 years the Democrats completely controlled most of the government in NC. During this time they highly gerrymandered the state's voting districts. Yet Democracy didn't fail and that unaccountable majority was held to account and voted out of power over the last 6 years.
In regards to the courts, NC's redistricting already subject to special court review.

The issue is not with the voters defining everything by the party, its with the politicians doing so...some would rather destroy the country (or state, county, city, etc.) than see the other party (or President, governor, Mayor, etc.) be credited for an accomplishment. Whats needed, at least at the national and state level, is a viable third (or even better, third and fourth) party.
Simply voting an equal mix of R's and D's accomplishes nothing, except gridlock, which may be fine in the short term, but isn't a long term strategy for success.
Exactly....the government does everything wrong and that's where the problem lies.
Yeah, who needs police, fire, military, courts, air traffic controllers, roads, water and sewer services, health inspections, patent and trademark protections, deed recordation, courts...nah, not me!
