Default Drive Slow in Left Lane - Score a $200 Fine

IMO, it's about time they dealt with this.

I wonder if driving slow in the left lane is an effect caused by motorists driving dangerously slow in the outer lane. Mopeds and other vehicles doing 20 miles per hour in a 50 miles per hour zone seems dangerous.

^Mopeds are not supposed to be in the left lane, by law unless it is to make a turn. They are not legally allowed on freeways.

Almost certainly, this law is applying to controlled access roads that Mopeds are not even allowed on in the first place.

I am all for his law. NC has a vague, weak left lane law that every Barney Fife can use to justify staying there at or below the speed limit.

I will add that since they are limiting this to cars going below the speed limit, it will still be weaker than it needs to be.

How about simply, "Keep right except to pass". Then there is no question about who needs to be in the lane and it covers pretty much ever scenario and speed.

That would be too much like admitting they've been wrong for 50 years.

Sorry. I can't get behind this one. Seems like a useless law that will rarely, if ever, be enforced. Look at the no texting and driving law. When is the last time that has been enforced? Is this a "I want to go 80MPH and you need to get the hell out of my way" law? Or is there really a practical need for it?

I doubt there will be a lot of enforcement either, but it will give the police the option to ticket someone if they witness someone holding up traffic. Whether someone is going the speed limit, and holding up speeders or going below the speed limit and holding up traffic is irrelevant, imo. These people cause an unsafe situation by forcing people to pass them on the right, and bottlenecking traffic.

I've encountered these types of drivers all over the country, and NC is not too bad compared to other areas I've lived. Florida is the absolute worst place I've seen for slow left lane driving. They were also ranked #4 a few years ago as having the worst drivers in the country. I'm sure this is one of many reasons for that distinction

Here's a funny video of the police enforcing left lane slow pokes:

Language warning.
