Hi. We're currently in Boston. It’s been great but we’re done here and recently started talking about our next move. We’re a multiracial family, well educated, Jewish (not religious but culturally Jewish), socially liberal but fiscally conservative.
I looked into some areas of the country that were not only diverse but well integrated. Charlotte and the Durham area popped up a couple times. Not at the top of the list but far enough away from the bottom. Other things we want is an ok climate, ok economy, and an area that has a good school or programs for kids with learning disabilities.
Note that it’s not just open mindedness that we are after, it’s the real presence of a diverse and integrated community.
Should I be looking at Charlotte, Durham, or any other area in NC?
there isnt a single city you couldn't successfully live in, you are one of a litany of uninformed outsiders with bigoted assumptions. No disrespect meant.

To me Durham is segregated and city data transplants with the school district obsession have a lot to do with it
I don't think of Durham as particularly segregated. The subdivision I live in - and most of the ones we were looking at before we bought - are pretty integrated.

and integrated spread of mostly transplants im sure. If I go to towntown and walk five blocks toward UNCC its like a different world

I would consider Greensboro as well
Whoa! Didn't see that backhanded advice coming.
Nice to see there are nutso people in NC. Was afraid I'd miss them if I left. No disrespect meant.
It's true that we do often get questions along the lines of "I know North Carolina is in the South, is it terribly racist?" It does get old.
No, it's not particularly racist here although there are always a few bad apples everywhere. Yes, you can be purple, blue, green whatever and you will be welcomed. It's really a non-issue. I couldn't tell you how many families I know who are multiracial and all sorts of religions or lack thereof.
BTW, I don't find Durham segregated. There is a black section near the historically black college of NC Central (not UNC-C, that's in Charlotte), but that's pretty much to be expected. Durham does not have a racial majority. It's about 40% black, 40% white, 10% hispanic, and 10% asian and others.
You might like to check out the racial dot map. Just google that phrase.
*shrug* its not nutso but once a week some curious transplant vents their irrational fears about racism here
You could have simply searched the forums to find your own answer
Boy, are you a fun one! Sounds like I touched a nerve. Tell me, how many times a week do you vent your irrational frustration that people think of you as racist because of where you live? Stop thinking...that’s a rhetorical question.
Meh, there's at least one in every thread who has a bizarre way of reading into things, drawing massively erroneous conclusions, being defensive, and exhibiting a lack of basic reading comprehension (i.e. you).
You’re one crazy little cookie my friend. But hey, I love cookies. Especially the chewy ones.
